Maison Stephan

Tupin-et-Semons, Côte-Rôtie

Jean-Michel Stephan’s first harvest was in 1991, but wasn’t until 1994 that Jean-Michel produced his first wine. The following year he received the organic certification, though the vineyards had been farmed as such since the very beginning.

Jean-Michel’s passion for biology and plants led him to study winemaking in Belleville (Saone et Loire) as well as in Beaujolais, where he came in touch with other natural wine pioneers such as Marcel Lapierre and began integrating into a movement of like-minded producers.

As of 1997 he converted to biodynamics, working on approximately five hectares in Côte Rôtie, plantend mainly at Syrah and Serine. The vineyards are on terraces and slopes, some of it so steep that they don't even allow his horse to work on!

Since 2017, Jean-Michel's son Romain also joined the domaine, giving birth to Maison Stephan. Together they started farming an additional five hectares in and around nearby villages such as Condrieu and Ampius.
