MICKAEL BOURG

Cornas
Rhône

Mika has had a steep rise to fame in the Northern Rhône. Deciding to venture into winemaking after two years of working as a mechanic, Mickaël leased his fruit from vines from Matthieu Barret, who he had worked with previously and who provided him with some cellar space to produce his first wine in 2006.

Mickaël’s holdings have increased since then but he remains to this day a micro-domaine. His 1.5 hectares of vines lie within the appellations of Cornas and Saint-Péray and are farmed organically and moreover completely by hand.

In the cellar, he prefers whole cluster fermentations for the reds and steers clear of chemical additives. We have simply fallen for these incredible wines, which show defiantly rustic character and astonishing complexity.

Winemaking
This comes from a tiny parcel in the heart of the AOC planted at old vines. Grapes are sofly pressed and vinified in vat before spending a minimum on 10 months in oak barrels to age on fine lees. Bottled after racking without filtration.
Tasting Note
Notes of citrus, pear and dried fruits. A little nutty with pleasant toasted bitters coming though on the finish. On the palate the Marsanne presents itself in all its weight and depth. Concentrated ripe fruit balanced by a lifting mineral structure.

Tasting
Note Attractive nose of black fruits, smokey and flowery notes and that unmistakable white pepper quality. Lovely weight but very composed. Tannins are very fine and well-integrated. It will improve with time but surprisingly pleasant even in its youth.
